Roman's family


Romans Family Life

The family was very important to the Romans, as a result it was the center of this ancient civilization. The ancient Romans live in a time of wars and conquests, what due to an important space in the society, the slaves. As a result the average Roman family consisted of father, mother, children, married sons and slaves. If you didn't get married by the age of 15-16, then you were punished. The father was the most important member of the family, the mother and the children were never seen as important, consequently he was the person who decided who his children marry and also had the power of life or death over everyone, finally when a new baby was born it would be laid at its father's feet, if the father picked the baby up it would live, and if he ignored the baby it would be taken away to die. The father was known as PATERFAMILIAS. For women was quite hard. Women were under control of their husbands but controlled how the house was run as a result were known as the MATERFAMILIAS.





Roman Schools

Rome didn't have any public schools, as a result most children went to private school or studied at home, where many times the slaves taught them. Their subjects were reading, writing, and arithmetic. Before the age of fourteen, they studied Latin and Greek.
